Research Pursuits 【 display / non-display

  • Cation-pi interactions have been widely exploited and utilized in the structural biology arena, their fundamental importance in supramolecular chemistry and the pivotal role they play in host guest chemistry has rapidly expanded. We have clarified the importance of cation-pi interactions in the orientation of molecules in organic synthsis. We found that the orientation of azaanthracene and azastilbene can be controlled by the formation of pyridinium under acidic conditions, irradiation of which produced [4+4] and [2+2] dimers in high selectivities, respectively. In the case of azastilbene, the acid amount had a significant effect on the selectivity: in the presence of 1 equiv of HCl, the syn dimer was a major product, whereas in the presence of more than 2 equiv of HCl, solvent adducts were produced. These results strongly suggest the significant contribution of cation-π interactions.
