  • My researches concern mainly two topics. One is to analyze the relationship between the social functions of politics, religion, popular culture and traditional arts and those of professional drama and poetry in early modern England. To critically revalue and develop postmodern Shakespeare studies, my research draws attention to the importance of textual analysis of poetic and dramatic contexts, as well as that of social and political contexts. My research analyzes, for example, how Shakespeare and his contemporary poets used and transformed rituals, allegories, rhetoric, and various conventions of love poems and court entertainments. The other major topic of my research is early modern poets’ reception of classical literature, including the questions of imitation and rewriting. In the academic year 2012/2013, I took up the issues of developing printing technology and the circulation of cheap-priced student editions of classical poems in the sixteenth century, and examined how Christopher Marlowe, who was Shakespeare’s contemporary poet and playwright, might have accessed the sources for his imitations of classical and post-classical Greek poems.

  • I taught both general and specialist courses of English, which include thesis and essay writing, attaching the greatest importance to making students express their thoughts logically and effectively in a foreign language. Using English newspapers and videos online, I taught extensive reading and listening in current English. To those whose major is English culture and literature, I taught psychoanalytic criticism, narratology, early modern English, an introductory course in English language and culture, including Shakespeare, etc. In tutorial courses, which lead students to degree thesis writing, I think it most important for students to find their own topics, to analyze texts, and to study and develop preceding studies on the related topics, and I train them accordingly.
