Research Pursuits 【 display / non-display

  • Gravity has been considered as a kind of restrictive force providing such as the mechanical limits of growth and morphology of the organisms. I would like to reveal the possibility for gravity to develop new functions of the biological systems via collective interactions between the elements of the system. Collective interactions, which are ubiquitous in nature, and the resultant dynamic instability of the system itself are known to have an ability to amplify the subtle effects of external forces, such as that of gravity on the biological event the cellular dimensions.
    As a model of the research, we focused on the pattern transition of bioconvection generated by Chlamydomonas, and analyzed the effects of flagellar movement on the dynamic behavior of the pattern. As the ground simulation of he research proposal onboard ISS, we conducted micro- and hypogravity experiment using parabolic flight by an airplane, and difference between the thresholds of pattern formation and the gravitactic behavior of the swimming cell was quantitatively analyzed.
