Research Pursuits 【 display / non-display

  • [Evolution of olfactory and gustatory receptor repertoires in Drosophila.]Chemosensory stimuli play a crucial role for host selection in insects, including fruit flies. The evolutionary dynamics of chemosensory receptors in Drosophila were examined through phylogenetic analyses of chemosensory receptor gene family in 12 Drosophila species and comparison of expressed chemosensory receptor repertoires among 8 Drosophila species. Most chemosensory receptors originated before the divergence of Drosophila genus. Although the number of receptor genes is relatively similar, considerable amount of lineage specific gene gains and losses occurred during the divergence of each species, giving rise to highly diverse receptor repertoires between each species. Expansion and contraction of repertoire size may relate to the genome size and adaptation to host plant in Drosophila species.

  • 1. Undergraduate course
    In the “Basic Genetics” class, I lectured on the basic issues on “Population Genetics” and “Genetics bases of complex inheritance”. In the“Evolutionary Biology” class, I lectured on the basic issues on Evolutionary Biology. During the class, each student used a computer to do the basic molecular evolutionary analyses of DNA sequences. Two laboratory courses were taught: “Biology lab I”, “Basic Genetic lab.”

    2. Graduate course
    Recent research articles concerning each student’s interest were discussed in 2 classes, “Population Genetics” and “Advanced course in Population Genetics”. In “Population Genetics for Genetic Counseling”, we read text books such as “Genetics in Medicine (7th Ed.) and Human Molecular Genetics, and discussed about the related topic. In “Molecular Evolution”, we read the recent papers on the ENCODE project. In the summer `English Program”, I lectured under the topic of “How do our shape and color change?”.
