  • A sequence of metamorphosis and settlement in the coral Acropora is initiated by specific chemical cues from undersea substrates. Bacterial strains were previously isolated as metamorphosis inducers, but they cause metamorphosis without settlement and produce floating polyps. That is abnormal development in the context of life history. Observation of settlement processes indicated that settlement is achieved after a set of behaviour of the planula; circling around, spinning at and sitting on its favourite spot of substrate. We screened bacteria that induce such behaviour, and succeeded to isolate one strain having a unique activity. Planulae stopped swimming and stood up if touched a paper disk covered by the bacterial strain. It reveals part of settlement behaviour, and supports a view that settlement behaviour is induced by environmental signals distinct from those for metamorphosis.
